Horsing Around with Dennis Welsh

Dennis Welsh’s time ranching in Colorado and “rustling cattle in Texas” came in handy on his latest shoot for equine drug company, Zoetis. As a matter of fact, it is that imagery, along with his kids portfolio, that caught the eye of creatives at Bader Rutter prompting their call. After collaborating on ideas and ironing out the details of the shoot, Dennis and his team put their seamless production into place and brought it all to life.

First, he focused on finding a location and talent (kids and horses) that were up to the challenge. “I think we scouted about eight farms to find just the right one, and the folks here were terrific,” said Dennis of the farm they found outside of Chicago in Elgin, IL.

With a picturesque location on lock, Dennis set his sights on casting two young girls for the roles of an elegant English rider and a rough and tumble Western rider. As luck, and good casting, would have it, Dennis found two perfect young ladies, both with riding experience, game for the job. As always when working with kids, Dennis explained their part in the day and let them know how important they were to the shoot.

This is actually something Dennis is known for in his directing, encouraging talent to take ownership of their roles and have fun, adults and kids alike.  Dennis’ closing sentiments on the project summed up the experience perfectly, “in the end, this was one of those shoots where all the stars lined up. Great creative from Bader Rutter, a wonderful crew that I’ve worked with for years, super kids, and great weather.  It couldn’t have gone better.”
