Walter Smith: Shoots the Long Story Short for The Broad Foundation

Photographer and director Walter Smith loves people-watching, and documenting them is what he does best.  The Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation invests in people and the human intellect, body and spirit.  Walter’s appealing portraiture of real people in authentic settings was the ideal way to tell their story in book project, Long Story Short.

With grants to promising people and organizations, the Foundation works to improve public schools, advance scientific and medical research and makes the visual and performing arts accessible to the broadest audiences possible.

Shooting in great spaces in LA, Walter photographed people of all ages connecting to The Broad Foundation’s public programs and cultural depth.

Museum visitors relate to provocative art exhibitions as "Your body is a battleground" (©Barbara Kruger, 1989), colorful murals adorn outdoor arenas and striking architecture fosters an appreciation for contemporary art in open surroundings.

Walter also captures the Foundation’s philanthropic contributions to science and medicine by portraying laboratory researchers who make a difference.
